Publications: Dr. Bates has published more than competitively-selected 30 articles and book chapters at the intersection of health, science, and communication studies. Dr. Bates has published in communication journals, including Quarterly Journal of Speech, Rhetoric Review, Health Communication, Journal of Health Communication, Communication Studies, Howard Journal of Communications, and Argumentation & Advocacy. Dr. Bates has also published in several journals devoted to the biomedical sciences such as Journal of Genetic Counseling, Community Genetics, Clinical Genetics, Journal of the National Medical Association, Genetics in Medicine, and the American Journal of Medical Genetics. He has also sought to explore the intersection of the humanities and medical science in publications in the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy and the Journal of Medical Humanities Dr. Bates has also focused on journals committed to the intersection of communication and science, including Public Understanding of Science, Medical Informatics, and Social Science & Medicine, as well as other outlets. Research Interests: Dr. Bates’s research is in the public understanding of complex policy formation. Specifically, he investigates communication campaigns in the context of clean indoor air, alcohol consumption, and forest fire prevention; public understanding of medical genetics and biotechnological sciences; the construction of race in/and medicine; and, public presentation of British and American foreign policy. Teaching: Rhetorical Studies, Health Communication. Undergraduate courses include: Argumentative Analysis and Advocacy, Communication Theory, Persuasion, Courtroom Rhetoric, Political Rhetoric, Communication and the Campaign. Graduate courses include: Introduction to Health Communication, Introduction to Rhetoric and Public Culture, Public Understanding of Health and Healing, Rhetoric and Popular Culture.
