Professional Experience: Associate Professor, Ohio University (2006-Current); Assistant Professor, Ohio University (2002 - 2006); Assistant Professor and Faculty Director of the Academic Service Learning Center, Minnesota State University Moorhead (1999 - 2002); Graduate Teaching Assistant, University of Nebraska (1996 - 1999); Instructor, Truman State University (1994-1996); Graduate Teaching Assistant, Missouri State University (1992 - 1994); Chair, Vice-Chair, and Historian of the CSCA Health Communication Interest Group (1999 - 2002); Chair and Vice-Chair of the CSCA Federation Prize Committee (2003-2004); Secretary of the Applied Communication Division of NCA (2003-2005).

Honors: Honor's College Distinguished Mentor Award, Ohio University (2007); Affirming Humanity Award, Ohio University (2007); Distinguished Edited Book Award by the Applied Communication Division of the National Communication Association (2006); Outstanding Graduate Faculty Member in School of Communication Studies, Ohio University (2005); Central States Communication Association Federation Prize (2002); Sister Pat Kowalski Leadership Award, State of Minnesota (2002); College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Graduate Teaching Assistant Award, University of Nebraska (1998); Research Fellowship, University of Nebraska (1997); Educator of the Year Award, Truman State University (1995).

 

Research Interests: Dr. Harter conducts research about discourses of health and healing and organizing processes. Her work uses feminist and narrative theory-praxis as resources in organizing for social change, and spans a variety of social justice issues including disability issues, gender inequity, poverty and homelessness, and democracy in the workplace.
