Professional Experience: Stocker Professor of Communication Studies, Ohio University, Professor and Associate Professor, Purdue University; Assistant Professor, Pennsylvania State University.

 

Publications: Author of the book Friendship Matters: Communication, Dialectics, and the Life Course; and scholarly articles in Communication Theory, Western Journal of Communication, Basic Communication Course Annual, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Studies in Symbolic Interaction, Journal of Applied Communication Research, Communication Monographs, Human Communication Research, Research on Language and Social Interaction, Women’s Studies in Communication, Communication Yearbook, Communication Quarterly, and numerous book chapters.

 

Honors: For research: The Theory That Has Left a Legacy Award: “The Dialectical Perspective,” Communication Theory Interest Group, Central States Communication Association (2002); Choice Outstanding Academic Book (1993), Gerald R. Miller Book Award, Interpersonal and Small Group Interaction Division of NCA (1994).

For teaching: Purdue University School of Liberal Arts Educational Excellence Award (2002-2003); W. Charles Redding Award for Excellence in Teaching, Department of Communication, Purdue University (five times); Purdue University School of Liberal Arts Departmental Educational Excellence Award (2000-2001).

 

Teaching and Research Interests:    Interpersonal communication, dialogue and experience, communication in public and private relationships, interpretive and ethnographic inquiry, communication and narrative, Gregory Bateson and communication theory, and communication in friendships across the life course.
