About the Program

Hello and thank you for your interest in the Doctoral Program in Communication Studies at Ohio University!  Our Ph.D. program is one of the oldest in the nation and has an international reputation for excellence in promoting engaged scholarship. Through our research, teaching, and service, scholars from our school have sought to improve, entertain, and enlighten the world around us; we hope that you will consider being part of our dynamic scholarly community!

In the school of Communication Studies we feel strongly that our scholarly efforts are directly tied to the academic community that we are able to build.  Consequently, we are continually searching for students and faculty who are passionate about the role of communication in improving the lives of those who live around us.

Because we are a doctoral program many of our applicants have MA degrees in communication or related disciplines; applicants with bachelors degrees and very strong credentials are also considered for “direct to doctorate” admittance.  We also actively recruit and admit applicants who contribute to the conceptual, methodological, and cultural diversity practiced by our school.

Our graduate program offers the Ph.D. degree for advanced study in one of three tracks: (a) Relating and Organizing (an integrated track for organizational and interpersonal), (b) Health Communication, and (c) Rhetoric and Public Culture. Our reputation in these areas is very strong with top ten rankings in organizational and health communication and top 20 rankings in interpersonal and rhetoric according to the most recent NCA reputation study.

Students in our program receive mentoring that is second to none.  The faculty boasts an impressive list of accomplishments:

£     Five members of our faculty currently or within the past three years have served as editors of international or national communication journals including Communication Yearbook, Health Communication, Review of Communication, The Basic Communication Course Annual, and the Journal of Media Ecology.

£     Six members of our faculty have been awarded the title of “University Professor” for excellence in teaching and one has been awarded the “Presidential Teacher” award, the most prestigious teaching award offered by Ohio University. Three members of our faculty have been named the university Outstanding Graduate faculty member. In the past 20 years, 14 of our graduate students have been named outstanding graduate teaching assistants at the university level.

£     One member of our faculty has been awarded the “Presidential Research” award for excellence in research.

In essence, the doctoral program in communication studies at Ohio University has an engaged and productive community of scholars.  I encourage you to continue exploring our program by perusing our website or by contacting me.

Sincerely,

Scott Titsworth
