Lynn Harter Named First Steven and Barbara Schoonover Professor Health Communication

The School of Communication Studies is delighted to announce that Associate Professor Lynn Harter has been selected as the first Steven and Barbara Schoonover Professor of Health Communication. Professor Harter joins Professor William Rawlins, the Stocker Professor of Communication, and Dan West, the John A. Cassesee Director of Forensics, as the School’s third named professor.

Created through an endowment provided by Steven and Barbara Schoonover, the Schoonover Professorship in Health Communication provides research funds for a Communication Studies faculty member who is actively engaged in scholarly projects within the broad area of health communication. Lynn will be using that support, in part, as she continues work with Casey Hayward (Assistant Professor in Media Arts and Studies) and Courtney Cole (Ph.D. student in the School of Communication Studies) on a documentary concerning pediatric cancer care. The film they are developing features the work of Dr. Pete Anderson, an osteosarcoma specialist, and his colleagues at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. (A ten minute clip from the film can be viewed by going to

As one colleague noted upon hearing of Lynn’s appointment, “this is well-deserved recognition of Lynn’s sustained excellence in creating new insights and advancing conversations across our discipline and beyond; teaching and fostering learning with undergraduate and graduate students; mentoring students and colleagues within the School and across the discipline; and giving new meaning to how our scholarly work can serve others.”
