Checksheets in the Major

All students should now adhere to the semester requirements for completion of the COMS major. You can find these requirements listed in the 2011 or the 2012-13 check sheets. 

For reference purposes, quarter term course numbers are included on the Fall 2011 Year of Entry Checksheet.

The Related Area

Each COMS major must declare a "Related Area." The requirement can be met with a certificate, minor, or custom-designed "related area." Whatever option you choose, a minimum of 18 hours must be completed. Students should enroll in 9 hours at the 1000- and 2000-level and 9 hours at the 3000- and 4000-level. For those students earning certificates or minors that require only 15 credit hours, you will need to take an additional 3 hours in that related area in order to meet your COMS major requirements. The form below can be downloaded and filled-out collaboratively with your advisor.

In addition to the spring courses, COMS plans to offer the following courses during the 2012-13 summer term: 1030, 1010, 1100, 2020, 2050, 2060, 2150, 3500, 3602, 3603, 4100, 4604, 4800. Some of these courses will be available face-to-face and others will be available online.

Independent studies are designed for students who have a clear idea of what they would like to study and/or accomplish outside of the traditional COMS courses. If you would like to discuss taking an independent study with any COMS faculty member you will need to download the form below.

Please be sure to visit with the faculty member you would like to have partner with you in this endeavor as you complete the form. Both parties will need to sign the form and then submit a copy to the Undergraduate Director for documentation purposes.

The Minor in Communication Studies was revised with the Quarter to Semester transition. We are working on providing you with an updated checksheet. Students interested in adding the minor should go to their major college and speak to a student services staff member; majors in the School of Communication Studies cannot minor in COMS. Students minoring in COMS will not have an advisor in Communication Studies.
